The Echoes of Faydwer expansion introduced several new quest series regarding the return of the gods. These quests allow players to help the gods regain power in the lands, make sacrifices at that deity's altar in return for favor that can be used to call down miracles and the like, and so on.
While a deity revamp is still in the works, another good-only gooddess, Erollisi Marr, was added in 2015 to the list of those who could be worshipped.
On top of the altars being quest rewards within the deity progression, there are carpenter-made versions of the altars. The common (tier 4) altars look the same as the basic altar rewarded in each deity quest line, and the rare (tier 7) "imbued" altars looks the same as the advanced altars that are given out later in each quest series. (The crafted altars reduce your purchase cost for blessings and miracles in comparison to the quested altars - see chart below the images for details.)
All crafted altars are no value. There is no status rent reduction tied to these house items. In addition, altars cannot be placed in guild halls, due to how the worship system is handled. However, there is a "shrine" version of these altars that is purely decorative, for use in guild halls and homes alike. These decorative shrines
No trade recipe books for the altars are sold on special Deity Historian NPCs at the BBM docks and in front of the Kelethin Library.
Common altars (level 35 recipes) use: 9 severed briarwood, 2 feyiron clusters, 1 etched leather pelt, 8 garnet sandpaper. The rare ("imbued") altars (level 65 recipes) use: 1 rough lumbered ebony, 14 rough lumbered rosewood, 3 adamantine clusters, 2 horned leather pelts, 20 acrylia sandpaper.
In each of the below images, the common altar is on the left, the rare version is on the right.

So, I Have an Altar - Now What?
Deities reward their faithful worshippers with various blessings and miracles, each of which has a specific favor cost assigned to it. This favor is earned by performing specific quests for your deity, as well as sacrificing various items of value at an altar dedicated to that deity. Crafted altars reduce the favor cost of such blessings and miracles, in comparison to their quested counterparts.
This list also include the Blessed altar, a dropped altar that has the same graphic as the crafted rare imbued altar, and the Ordained altar. (The Ordained altar is a fabled no-trade drop from Mayong Mistmoore - thanks, Faush, for the added details!).
Numbers used in the below are comparing the first available blessing and miracle. Blessings and miracles vary in cost based on which one you select, but the percentage discount should stay the same for any specific altar type.

Shrines
As mentioned above, the way worship at altars is handled made it so that altars are not allowed to be placed in guild halls. An additional carpenter-only recipe book (Decorative Deity Shrines) was added to the Deity Historian NPCs containing recipes for purely decorative shrines that can be placed in the guildhall. Decorative means that they cannot be used for worship, but you can place them for looks. In addition, each of these shrines have extra particle effects that you do not see with the common or imbued version, making them even more impressive decorations than their more humble counterparts.
The recipes are level 65, and require 3 rough lumbered rosewood, 2 adamantine cluster, 1 horned leather pelt and 10 acrylia sandpaper. The finished shrines have 100 rent status reduction when placed in a home.
