GU63: Elite Apprentice Details

Introduction

There are two new "elite" apprentices available with Game Update 63, each with their own unique recipes that can be researched. The recipes that they research do not use reactants, and are mainly aimed at raiders, so they're more difficult to obtain than standard apprentices.

Your current apprentices still function as usual and will not have any new recipes. (Remember, the colossal reactant recipes are for level 90 gear, and the next tier of reactant recipes would be for level 100 gear.) The new apprentices are in addition to your current apprentice, so in theory, you could own up to three apprentices per level 90+ crafter.

The first apprentice, Deshniak, is from the hardest of the three solo/duo daily Skyshrine instances (Dracur Prime), or from the group version of the instance. It will require level 90+ adventurer to enter, and it can be duoed. You do not need to complete the instance to obtain the tradeable prism that will allow you to claim the apprentice, only reach a certain area and complete a ring event. Everyone who completes the ring event can get a prism. The quest can be repeated daily.

A level 90+ crafter must then activate the prism in order to claim the apprentice. Recipes researched will be based on your subclass, not your class (scholar, outfitter, craftsman), and will require T10 rares and drops from the bosses in the heroic Skyshrine instances. Components for Deshniak recipes drop from any heroic bosses. Golems drop golem parts, dragons drop dragon parts, etc.

The second (elder Yelnar) apprentice is from the Skyshrine Underdepths raid (you will need to complete a short quest line to free him from Dozekar's trap). It will also need level a 90+ crafter to claim the apprentice from the tradeable prism. Again, recipes researched will be based on your subclass, not your class, and recipes will require rares as well as raid boss drops from the Skyshrine raid instances. (As with the other apprentice drops, you'll find that golems drop golem parts, dragons drop dragon parts, etc. )

Due to the complex nature of these draconic recipes (end results aimed at raiders), the apprentices cannot be coached/assisted in any way to speed up research.

As you can see from the image at the top of the page, Deshniak is a bit large when compared to a high elf, much less an othmir apprentice, and you can get quite a serious crick in your neck from trying to talk with him or with his counterpart, Yelnar. Being acourteous sorts, however, he and Yelnar are willing to kneel, so as to be at a friendlier height when speaking to us youngsters. (Note that you cannot change the apprentices from kneeling to standing while the home is published on the leaderboards, so make sure to adjust them before you publish.)

There are still a couple things minorly askew with the below lineups (a couple classes missing an armor piece, scouts getting a cloak from each apprentice, but tanks having no cloak, etc.), but this list was current as of April 26, 2012.

Recipe Details - Deshniak ("solo")

Deshniak's recipes are broken down by subclass, so a woodworker, provisioner or carpenter would all have the same craftsman recipe set to research. Likewise, all the scholars share a recipe pool, and all the outfitters share a recipe pool. Any drops required by these recipes will be obtained from named mobs in the heroic Skyshrine instances. (Drops are tradeable.) All recipe research takes 18 days and 12 hours and cannot be sped up in any way.

Recipe Details - Yelnar ("raid")

Likewise, all the scholars share a recipe pool, and all the outfitters share a recipe pool. Any drops required by these recipes will be obtained from named mobs in the Skyshrine raid instances. Note that the main naming difference between the heroic drops for Deshniak's research, and the raid drops for Yelnar's research is the addition of the word "Prime" in the name for the raid drops. (Drops are tradeable.) All recipe research takes 18 days and 12 hours and cannot be sped up in any way.

For the five furniture recipes that will are available from the each of the elite apprentices for craftsmen, both sets use the same furniture models, but version 1 (raid) is a brassy metallic sheen (pictured below), and version 2 (solo) is a pale stone texture.

Left to right: fierce dragon head statue, version 1; arcane dragon statue, version 1; noble dragon head statue, version 1; drakota statue, version 1; benevolent dragon statue, version 1. The base of the benevolent dragon statue has a dark mirror sheen, almost water-like.

A comparison of the version 1 (raid) and version 2 (solo/duo/heroic) of the drakota statue.

Obtaining Deshniak

Deshniak is found in the Skyshrine zone "Dracur Prime", in the solo, duo or heroic versions. You must be at least a level 90 adventurer in order to access this instance, and you're likely not going to want to complete the entire instance the first time you wander in there, due to the fact that it is the toughest of the three instances that you can first access. If you need help figuring out how to get to Skyshrine, there is a Withered Lands map and some details on how to get to Alivan (where you hop a drakota up to Skyshrine), in the GU63 Preview.

If you are not a level 90 adventurer, then the research prisms are tradeable, and it is a good idea to know the amount of work that goes into obtaining one before you set out to buy/barter/what have you to obtain one.

Once you are in Skyshrine, you hail the Mission Master, Cek'Arktor, and select the option to kill Tigloth the Conqueror, which gives you the quest "Collapsing the Capitol" and allows you access to the zone. Enter the zone, and proceed slowwwwwwwwwwwly until you get a feel for the extremely large aggro range on many of the mobs.

On the above map, you will enter in the circular area, and need to proceed to the spot marked with the red arrow. This generally includes at least 3 groups and 2-3 roamers, but it is better to clear a bit extra than have some surprise adds when you get to the ring event!

The first group that you want to clear is directly ahead of you when you zone in - a pair of droag pacing up and down the walkway. I strongly recommend taking several large steps forward before you pull them, because they often have a very nasty trick up their sleeve.

They, like a few other droag in Skyshrine instances, seem to like calling comets down from the sky. The sort of comets that are totally unsurvivable if they catch you unprepared. They give "air strike" a totally new meaning.

Fortunately, the comets can be avoided. I don't have the exact wording of the message handy (and Test just went down for a patch), but you'll suddenly get a red-text warning at the top of your screen about the air around you crackling or somesuch, and the ground around you will be lit up with a large red targeting octagon.

Get out of the targeting area immediately. Do not pause, do not stop to warn someone else in your group. Move. Stop to warn folks at that point, and you'll likely all be dead, instead of them dead and you alive and panting. Warn them in advance, m'kay? :D

My personal preference is always to be sure I've got a clear area directly behind me, so that I can backpedal quickly without landing in yet more mobs. I also keep my merc firmly leashed and NOT on assist or protect, because of these comets. (If they're going to happen, they're usually in the first few moments of the encounter, so just hold off on sending in your merc until you're sure the coast is clear.)

Once those roamers are out of the way, you're free to hop across the lawn to the next path to your left. You'll likely be hit by a solo roamer, then you'll find a group of drakota ahead and to the left, against a building. They'll aggro when you try to get past them, so you might as well pull them anyway. :)

Keep heading towards the spot on the map above (around -405, 0, 35 ), clearing as you go. As long as you take your time, and watch your health and cures, you should be ok, assuming a reasonable set of gear and AA. If you're a bit on the weak side, there's a reason you can go in as a duo!

When you arrive at the spot that I have marked, you will get to watch a little scripted fight. Once the fighting is finished, you'll have a cluster of untargetable corpses around a very large kneeling droag, one Apprentice Overknight Deshniak. Hail him, and you'll start a small ring event. (Only one person needs to hail him if you are in a duo or group.)

You say, "Hail, Apprentice Overknight Deshniak"
Apprentice Overknight Deshniak says to you, "My strength...is failing...more are coming. You stay...you die..."
You say to Apprentice Overknight Deshniak, "No, I will not leave you to die alone! We fight together!"
Apprentice Overknight Deshniak says, "They're here!"

The mobs come from quite a distance out, and cast a debuff at extreme range, so keep your pets/warders or mercs on a tight leash, and don't let them protect/assist on incoming. Otherwise, they'll play lemming and run out, draw extra aggro, and die useless deaths. ;P

The first to attack is a group (pair?) of drakota, then a group of droag, then a single wyvern, then a pair of golems.

If you die, or the encounter breaks, you will need to search out these mobs within the instance and tackle them where they are, which is another reason for a bit of preclearing the path between the entrance and the apprentice. (I found I could break the encounter if I was standing with my back too close to the back wall on the initial wave of drakota - they generally start with a rude knockdown/back that apparently pushed me just enough out of range to break the encounter. Fortunately, I was watching where they flew to, and was able to run up and pull them once they reset without too much extra trouble. The ring event continued normally once they were dead.)

When the waves are all dead, everyone in the group can hail Deshniak to receive his summoning prism.

You say, "Hail, Apprentice Overknight Deshniak"
Apprentice Overknight Deshniak says to you, "I've seldom witnessed such heroism, least of all from a mortal. You surprise me."
You say to Apprentice Overknight Deshniak, "Well, I can still leave you here to die..."
Apprentice Overknight Deshniak says to you, "Wait! Help me up. I should still be able to make it out once I'm on my feet again."
You say to Apprentice Overknight Deshniak, "Very well...up and at 'em!"
Apprentice Overknight Deshniak says to you, "You have my thanks, and my debt. Perhaps I can repay my debt to you by translating some of our Dracurion recipes into your native tongue."
You say to Apprentice Overknight Deshniak, "Those recipes could aid in our fight against the Awakened. We need all the help we can get. What's the catch?"
Apprentice Overknight Deshniak says to you, "The problem is this can take some time due to the intricacies of our crafting techniques. Here, take this teleportation stone and place it in your dwelling. This will allow me to work for you while we continue to fight the Awakened. Until we meet again..."

Each party member who hails him will receive 50 xp and Deshniak's Research Prism. The prism itself is fully tradeable, and can be consumed by a level 90+ crafter to summon the no-trade Apprentice Deshniak to place in their home.

You can repeat this mini-quest in a fresh instance once your zone timer runs out. (Currently, you can reset the zone timer, under Alt-Z>Persistent Instances after 18 hours.) This can be especially handy if you have some squishies in your alt-army and want to run the instance to gather extra prisms to pass around.

To reword things a bit to be sure there is no confusion: The quest for the prism requires a level 90+ adventurer in the hardest of the Skyshrine solo/duo/group instances, but does not require completion of the instance. The quest is repeatable once a day-ish, based on zone timers. The prism itself is tradeable and can be used, gifted or sold on the broker, etc. A level 90+ crafter who is flagged for the AoD expansion (required for any apprentice) can then claim the no-trade apprentice from the prism and place him in their home for research purposes. There is a limit of 1 apprentice Deshniak per character. You can have both Yelnar and Deshniak claimed on the same crafter.

Obtaining Yelnar

There just aren't enough hours in the day to do everything myself, and I had zero time for raid testing while this was being tested. Therefore, that information which wasn't gleaned directly from Omougi, has been given to me second- and third-hand.

Elder Yelnar is apparently trapped by Dozekar in the Skyshrine Underdepths raid instance. So, in theory, somewhere around Dozekar, you should see a droag that cannot be attacked, in some form of distress.

You will first need to pick up the quest from him, then have your raid force kill Dozekar, then your raid will have ONE single looted drop that one single person on the raid can loot to fulfill the quest requirement from Yelnar. You will bring the item back to Yelnar, who will then send you off with a recipe that you will need to combine. You will need: 5 banyan roots, 5 metallic reptile hide, 5 bubinga, 5 osmium cluster, among other things, for this one-charge quest recipe combine. You will then bring the finished product back to Yelnar, in order to receive the prism that can be used by a 90+ crafter to summon the apprentice researcher for placement in their home.

Again, the prism itself is tradeable and can be used, gifted or sold on the broker, etc. A level 90+ crafter who is flagged for the AoD expansion (required for any apprentice) can then claim the no-trade apprentice from the prism and place him in their home for research purposes. There is a limit of 1 apprentice Yelnar per character. You can have both Yelnar and Deshniak claimed on the same crafter.

If you have multiple alts to track, you might also find this downloadable apprentice recipe spreadsheet to be of use. This spreadsheet includes both the normal apprentice recipes, and the two elite apprentices.
