Home Sweet Hovel

Moving from your low-rent, but quickly cramped inn room sounds like a great idea, but there are several things to consider before you take the plunge. Based on your needs you may want to consider:

  • Location: Generally, the closer you are to the transport bells, the more likely it is that you will be paying more for less, so convenience vs. cost can be a factor
  • Number of rooms: More rooms means more room to place items, but it also means higher rent. In most cases, you can place 100 furniture items for every room in your home, up to a 700-item limit.
  • Cost: Cost is broken down into the inital purchase price as well as weekly rent. You can reduce the status portion of any weekly rent by placing status-reducing furniture in your home.
  • Items: The base item count for the home. This can be increased via one crafted house expander, and one station cash house expander

Residency requirements changed with GU56 since each character could now own up to 10 homes (later increased to 20 homes). The new rule is that ownership is restricted by alignment. If you are a Freeport resident, you still can't get that cozy acorn in Kelethin, but you can have homes in Neriak and Gorowyn. You can still change residency, but it no longer affects housing choices.

Travel and Housing

The travel revamp of GU56, the ability to own multiple homes, and the introduction of Portal Objects for prestige homes has drastically changed the interaction between travel and housing. Housing is now a big part of travel planning, especially when considering alignment issues. You see, a character with a prestige home can put portal objects in any house to which he has proper access, including houses in areas of opposite alignment. Since the portal object can be used by anyone with proper access to the house where it is located [Visitor level I think. Need to verify], it can be used to magnify the reach of those pesky, expensive and one-to-a-customer Magic Doors to your guild hall. Put the Door in your prestige home, sprinkle portal objects in useful places and presto! Instant travel network for the faction-impaired. (Personal note: Therendil no longer bothers posting a list of Doors for people to use to get to the guild hall for the first time. He simply notes that there is a Door in his Magical Manor and that all his alts all have Portal Objects in their homes. Other guildmates do likewise. We effectively have dozens of Doors as a result.)

Added Notes

  • If you need help finding any of these homes, remember that alt-w (when in the proper zone) will give you a helpful little wisp to lead you to the front door of the desired address.
  • Any room count listed with a "+" after it indicates a home with an extra outdoor area added on.
  • Last, but not least, many, many, huge, ginormous thanks to Therendil for obtaining the updated information for all of these. This guide sat on the back burner for a very long time before it was adopted and updated with the most current housing information.

Status Homes

Status homes are available for those who meet a minimum guild level (GL) requirement, allowing them to spend some of their earned Guild Status Points (GSP) in place of a portion of what the cash cost would be for a non-status home. Technically, if you find a willing guild of the proper level, you can always get a guild invite long enough to buy your home, then leave the guild. (Guild level is only checked at the time of purchase, so you won't lose your home if you leave the guild.) Many folks, however, consider this to be bad form.

Maj'Dul

In order to purchase a home in Maj'Dul, you must align yourself with one of the city's factions. Reaching kindly status will allow you to purchase a deed for a basic home, warmly allows you to puchase the deed for a standard home, and ally allows you to purchase the deed for an affluent. Deeds cost 60s each, and must be consumed from inventory in order to unlock the ability to actually buy the home.

Maj'Dul Status Housing
type Deed rooms items purchase rent
simple apartment Basic 2 200 14g 62s, 22000 status 59s, 3000 status
small apartment Basic 2 200 24g 36s 97s 44c
merchant apartment Standard 3 300 57g 96s, 86000 status 2g 32s, 9000 status

affluent residence Affluent 6 700 1p 93g 62s 7g 74s

Notes:

Notes: The Affluent Residence is the one Maj'Dul house with an outdoor area.
The small apartment is on a rooftop, and must be accessed by a climbing wall
Access to the Mercenary Residence is a challenge. You must climb a wall to a rooftop across the street, then work your way down two roofs to a plank that takes you over the street, than back one roof to your door. Oh, and the rooftops are populated with aggressive Dervish thieves in the level 45-50 range. Not recommended if you like to hold parties.
